New York’s 6 Hottest Houseplants (According to Google)

As a Hudson Valley-based garden designing and planter service company, we don’t spend a lot of time on Google. But it is interesting to look from time to time at Google Trends, which now has 20 years of historical data on search trends in our region. We took a look at the top “trending” searches by New Yorkers who were searching for information about houseplants. The following is that list, which is a hint at what plants our friends and neighbors are buying the most for their homes.

1. Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

The Golden Pothos, also commonly known as the “devil’s ivy” or “money plant” is very easy to take care for busy homeowners. It’s a hardy species that features a vine and heart-shaped leaves. Its aerial roots allow it to be versatile as a hanging plant or on shelves with trailing vines. It thrives in many settings, even with poor lighting or irregular watering schedules.

2. Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa)

The Swiss Cheese Plant is known as a natural air purifier and humidifier, and in Chinese culture, it is a symbol of longevity and prosperity. Its leaves have interesting gaps and holes, and it looks like it would be at home in a jungle. Like the money plant, it’s easy to take care of with a little light and watering.

3. Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata)

The Fiddle Leaf Fig is an accessible “tropical” plant for indoor gardeners and decorators. IT’s popular because it has a sculptural shape, large leaves and a thin trunk. For feng shui enjoyers, it symbolizes new beginnings and growth, and is a popular gift. They’re easy to take care of and grow slowly.

4. Guiana Chestnut (Pachira aquatica)

This is also known as a “money plant” and features a braided trunk and glossy leaves. It is very low maintenance, needing only indirect sunlight and moderate watering. It can reach up to six to eight tall, and can live up to a decade.

5. Snake Plant (Dracaena Trifasciata)

The snake plant is another low-maintenance, hardy plant that can survive despite infrequent watering and low light. It has unique sword-like leaves, and has air-purifying qualities. According to feng shui, it is believed to “facilitate learning.”

6. Succulents

The general grouping of “succulents” was the sixth-most Googled kind of plant for New Yorkers. There are many different kinds, ranging from jade plants, aloe, cacti, and many more. They can be grown in mini pots all the way up to large terrariums, and have many unique shapes and colors. Like the other plants on the list, they can survive despite infrequent watering.
